First Fold’s second issue of their arts journal Premier Pli will be out in June and I have proudly contributed a number of works to this issue (more on that closer to its release). First Fold’s mascot is a Plague Doctor and for this issue of Premier Pli all contibutors were asked to customise a paper toy grid, created by Alex Bermingham in their own peculiar way - with stunning results. “The assembled and photographed paper toys, based on the shape of the plague doctor, serve as artists portraits, solving the mugshot dilemma that inevitably causes contributors to over think their pictorial representations.” My particular customisation inspired by this issue’s theme of ‘nostalgia’ led me to create a hand stitched Fuzzy Felt version of The Plague Doctor (pictured in the centre of the grid of Plague Doctors).

Here at first fold, live performance has become an important part of our practice as artists working in sound. We wanted to mark this fact by inviting acts that we are involved with to submit a track that captured the raw excitement of live performance. Some of the tracks where captured at our BOYD events, some are studio jams, improvised pieces or intimate recordings with only the artist present, they are all one shot live performances and we would like to share these little gems with you. Please feel free to download our Easter Egg full of surprise, charm, naivety and mad skillz, tell your friends and feel free to share the joy!

“In the autumn of 1974 a mysterious object fell to Earth. Its impact triggered a series of strange happenings that tore at the fabric of reality and pushed belief to its limit. ‘The Occurrence’, the new EP by Wizards Tell Lies, is the soundtrack to that event.”

Wizards Tell Lies ‘The Scadgingtone’

From my band’s EP ‘The Occurrence’ released 19.03.12 through First Fold Records

Developed from yesterday’s sketch, this image is a character study for ‘The Dead Bird and the Wasp that Lives in Its Stomach’. The image is inspired by the photographs of Mathew Brady and the films The Derby Tup, Oss Oss Wee Oss and The Tichborne Mummers’ Play (all three can be found on BFI’s ‘Here’s a Health to the Barley Mow’ DVD).
